Hyalite is a form of amorphous silica featuring a glassy luster and characteristic botryoidal (grape-like) growth habits. While pure hyalite opal is water-clear, specimens with a higher abundance of uranium exhibit a distinct yellowish-green body color even under normal indoor and daylight conditions.
Fluorescence demonstrated at 365 nm long-wave UV light. Trace inclusions of uranyl ions within the silica structure cause this specimen to exhibit brilliant, neon-green fluorescence under ultraviolet light. The greener the fluorescence and natural coloration, the higher the uranium content within the specimen.
