Torbernite/Metatorbernite on Matrix
Common Name: Torbernite – also called Cupro-Uranite
Approximate Weight: 54g
Locality: Musonoi Mine, Kolwezi, Kolwezi mining district, Lualaba, DR Congo
Torbernite and meta-torbernite are minerals commonly found together on matrix formations. Torbernite exhibits a vibrant green color and has a distinct crystal structure. It is a secondary uranium mineral with the chemical composition of hydrated copper uranyl phosphate. Meta-torbernite, on the other hand, is a metamict variety of torbernite that has undergone radiation damage over time, resulting in an amorphous or disordered crystal structure. Both minerals are typically found in association with uranium deposits and are considered radioactive with a uranium content of no less than 48%. They often form on a matrix, which refers to the surrounding rock or mineral material in which they are embedded. The combination of torbernite and meta-torbernite on matrix creates visually striking specimens prized by mineral collectors and enthusiasts.
