A small triangular notch, approximately 6mm long, has been carved into the bottom or south pole of this specimen to create a flat surface that prevents it from rolling. This feature is visible in the last picture.
Weakly Radioactive: This specimen shows very low activity and is difficult to detect. Please note the location indicated at the end of the last video where the measurement was taken. In both videos, the specimen was oriented north-up, south-down.
Apatite can contain trace amounts of radioactive elements, such as uranium, radium and thorium. Uranium radium and thorium are naturally occurring radioactive elements that are commonly found in the Earth’s crust. When apatite forms in geological environments where these radioactive elements are present, it can incorporate them into its crystal structure.
