Antozonite, AKA Stinkspar, Stinkfluss, Stinkspat, Stinkstein
Common name: Antozonite
Weight: 341g
Size: 91x 47x52mm
Locality: from Wolsendorf, Bavaria
Formula: CaF2
Antozonite is a variety of fluorite characterized by the presence of multiple inclusions containing elemental fluorine. When the crystals are crushed or broken, the elemental fluorine is released. It was hypothesized that beta radiation from uranium inclusions causes the continuous breakdown of calcium fluoride into calcium and fluorine atoms. The fluorine atoms combine to produce difluoride anions, and upon losing the extra electrons at a defect, fluorine gas is formed. When the sides of this specimen are measured with a pancake tube in the GQ_GMC600, an activity above 600 CPM can be measured.
