Schoepite is a yellow, hydrous uranium oxide mineral commonly found in the oxidation zones of uranium deposits. It forms as a secondary mineral through the weathering of uraninite and other primary uranium minerals.
Uraninite is a primary uranium oxide mineral, typically black or brownish, and a significant uranium ore. Found in hydrothermal veins, pegmatites, and sedimentary deposits, it is the chief ore of uranium and a source of radium and radon gas.
The Green River Formation, spanning Colorado, Utah, and Wyoming, is renowned for its well-preserved Eocene-era fossils, extensive oil shale deposits, and significant radioactive minerals like uranium and thorium. This sedimentary formation, approximately 50 million years old, offers crucial insights into prehistoric life, ancient lake environments, and mineral resources.
This specimen was stabilized with Paraloid B-72, a commonly used conservation material in the field of mineral preservation, providing excellent protective qualities for long-term conservation. The stabilization process infused the specimen with an acrylic polymer resulting in a more rigid specimen that won’t break easily or fall apart over time.
