Samarskite-(y) was named in recognition of Colonel Vasilii Yevgrafovich Samarskii-Bykhovets (Васи́лий Евгра́фович Сама́рский-Быховец) (7 November 1803 – 31 May 1870), a Russian mining engineer and Chief of Staff of the Russian Corps of Mining Engineers, the element samarium was named after him.
