Paraloid B-72 is a type of acrylic resin that is commonly used in the preservation and conservation of cultural heritage objects. It can be used to protect autunite, which is a type of mineral that is known to deteriorate over time due to exposure to light, heat, and dry air. B-72 will provide structural support but may not prevent dehydration.
Here are the suggested steps for using Paraloid B-72 to stabilize autunite:
- Clean the surface of the autunite using a soft brush and water to remove any dust or dirt.
- Dry the Specimen for 24 hours by storing it a safe room temprature enviornment. (Wet autunite will not stabilize properly and a white residue will result.)
- Document the weight of the specimen to be stabilized.
- Dissolve Paraloid B-72 in a suitable solvent, such as acetone or 100% ethanol, to create a solution with a concentration of around 10%. This can be done by adding 10 grams of B-72 to 90 grams of solvent and stirring until it is fully dissolved.
- Apply the Paraloid B-72 solution to the surface of the autunite. It can be done using a dropper, or the specimen can be dipped into the solution.
- Immediately after the B-72 application, use light puffs of canned air to blow away any excess solution and prevent pooling.
- Allow the Paraloid B-72 to dry completely, which can take several hours depending on the environment.
- Any remaining white or shiny residual B-72 can be removed with a quick rinse of solvent followed by air.
