Fergusonite was named in honor of Robert Ferguson, a Scottish landowner, politician, and mineral enthusiast who lived from September 8, 1769, to December 3, 1840, in London, England. In 1987, the suffix was appended to adhere to the Levinson principle for minerals containing essential rare earth elements (in this instance, yttrium).
